Cowboys Micah Parsons Update Highlights Weird $161 Million Claim

An odd new report that purports to be an "update'' of the Dallas Cowboys' contract negotiations with Micah Parsons might garner a lot of attention ...

But hopefully only because it gets a lot of the facts wrong.

Cowboys Micah Parsons Update Highlights Weird $161 Million Claim

The national site claims, "The extension appears to be coming, and when it does, it will certainly eclipse the $160 million deal signed by Cleveland's Myles Garrett earlier this offseason.''

The site then quotes a Yahoo writer, claiming that he "is reporting more on the matter, breaking down the expectation.

And then the site misspells the superstar's last name as "Parson.''

Oh, and the site also projects Micah's new deal with a headline that reads, "Cowboys’ Micah Parsons gets $161 million contract update.''

Hmm.

First, with boots on the ground here at The Star in Frisco, the facts. ...

There has been no known movement toward anything "coming.''

As CowboysCountry.com was first to report, Parsons has privately suggested he'd love to sign a "Cowboy for Life'' deal for fiver years, with the expected total number to be around $40 million APY ... so $200 million total, which will the most for a non-quarterback in league history.

Micah has suggested that he's not planning a holdout, following in the footsteps of fellow team leader Dak Prescott, who stayed at work all last summer long while awaiting his eventually $240 million deal.

Now, back to the "report.''

"The Cowboys seem to enjoy waiting to pay their stars, even if it costs them more in the end," Yahoo writes. "That seems to be what's happening with Parsons, one of the NFL's elite defensive players who will get paid as such. Parsons is attending Cowboys workouts, which seems like a good-faith move by the player during negotiations. The question doesn't really seem to be if or even how much Parsons will get paid, it's when he'll get it."

With all due respect, Yahoo isn't "breaking down anything here.'' That all a rehash of what even the most casual of NFL fans knows.

Now, what about that "$161 million'' report? That is new ... but it's wrong.

Upon closer examination, the site is taking Yahoo's suggestion that Micah will be paid more than Cleveland's Myles Garrett makes ($160 million) and is simply adding a "1'' to the back of it. ... and voila, Micah's going to get "$161 million.''

That, of course, is not at all how any of this works.

And finally - acknowledging readily that typos happen: Parsons' persona and his money and his gaudy sack numbers, including a record pace to 50 sacks, certainly should cause all of us to make sure we get at least one thing right.

It's "Parsons.'' With an "s'' at the end.
