Cowboys’ Jerry Jones throws Trevon Diggs under the bus right after NFL Draft

Who could have known that Trevon Diggs signing a five-year, $97 million contract back in July 2023 would be where things took a turn for the worst?

The Dallas Cowboys gave Trevon Diggs the bag, and he has unfortunately not been able to hold up his end of the bargain on the field. Diggs suffered a torn ACL in 2023 and was limited to just 11 games in the 2024 season with knee cartilage issues. Injuries are part of the game, but when a player (especially someone as well-compensated as Diggs) suffers an injury, the expectation for attacking rehab is going to be more intensely scrutinized.

Dallas Cowboys, Trevon Diggs

And you can tell with a comment he made after the 2025 NFL Draft that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones hasn't been overly pleased with the way Diggs has worked his way back from injury in the past.

Jerry Jones takes a shot at Trevon Diggs while providing positive update

Jerry Jones on when Cowboys CB Trevon Diggs (knee) could return: “We have a good idea. He’s working hard. That’s very important because if he will be very good and diligent in his rehab process then he’ll get back quicker. And when he does get back, he’ll be sounder. If he has…

There's really nothing left for interpretation there. The Cowboys might not have drafted East Carolina's Shavon Revel as a direct future replacement for Trevon Diggs, but a comment like this does make you wonder if the Cowboys feel like they need better insurance at a crucial position because of Diggs.

Not that Revel wasn't a good pick in his own right, but this comment from Jones makes it seem like they felt cornerback was more of a necessity in the first two days of the draft as opposed to a luxury. They've got to be able to count on Diggs as one of the stars of this team to do his part not only when he's healthy enough to play, but he's got to be a culture carrier in the recovery and training room as well.

There is a really difficult tension here with the Cowboys wanting and needing Diggs back in the fold as soon as possible, but simultaneously not wanting to rush him back from injury and risking further damage. They also want to push him in his recovery because Jones basically confirmed here what were previously rumors about Diggs not attacking his recovery with as much verve as they were hoping for.

Jones said that the Cowboys do have an idea of when Diggs will return to the field, but we don't know if that is going to be "at some point" during the 2025 season or if it will be Week 1.

Regardless, Jones calling Diggs out after the draft is proof that Shavon Revel was not merely drafted as an insurance policy, but we might be looking at the future starter opposite DaRon Bland out there with Diggs being a total flop as a big-money player in a worst-case scenario.
