Cowboys’ Dak Prescott “Abandons” Future With Team Hours Before Week 1 In Latest Report

The Dallas Cowboys will be focusing on the 2024 season, and the 2024 season only, starting Sunday.  Three straight 12-win seasons have failed to result in even an appearance in the NFC Championship Game.  That will have to change sooner rather than later, or Dallas may be looking at another overhaul with their coaching staff.

Dak Prescott has put up some pretty outstanding numbers over the years as QB1 in Dallas.  Prescott (as well as many others) feel like he deserves to be among the highest paid quarterbacks in the NFL.

However, that could be happening with a new team.

The Dallas Cowboys May Not Have Dak Prescott Going Forward

According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk:

It appeared that the Cowboys and quarterback Dak Prescott had abandoned any hope of extending his contract before the start of the regular season. In recent days, the pendulum swung the other way.

Now, a night before the Week 1 game between Dallas and Cleveland, there’s a “small chance” it gets done.

That’s the latest word from a source with knowledge of the situation. And if it’s going to be officially done before 4:25 p.m. ET on Sunday, they’ll need to get an agreement in principle ASAFP, work out the language, type up the paperwork, and get Dak’s signature on the bottom line before he pivots to football mode.

Week 1 isn’t a real deadline. But if the two parties regard it that way, it is.

After the 2024 season, Prescott becomes an unrestricted free agent, and it could become near-impossible for the Cowboys to keep him from leaving. A few weeks or even months before that, he’ll know who wants him and how much they’re willing to pay.

There is no doubt that it is tampering. That won’t prevent it from happening.   If Dallas gets into a bidding war with a quarterback needy team with a lot of cap space, Prescott is likely good as gone.

With these reports surfacing the day before the 2024 season kicks off, it is safe to say that Prescott’s future after this season is very much up in the air.
