The Washington Commanders may have been working with fewer assets after acquiring Laremy Tunsil from the Houston Texans and Deebo Samuel from the San Francisco 49ers this offseason, but Adam Peters still managed to address some of the needs on the roster with his five picks in the 2025 NFL Draft.
Fortunately, one of those picks has been drawing has been the talk of training camp and has one analyst predicting Commanders rookie CB Trey Amos to have an instant impact in 2025.
Commanders Rookie CB Trey Amos Predicted to Have Instant Impact in 2025
Brent Sobleski of Bleacher Report recently listed 10 rookies who were selected outside of the first round in the 2025 NFL Draft who he expects to make an instant impact in 2025. Well, Commanders rookie CB Trey Amos, who has been getting buzz this training camp, was one of the players to appear on the list.
Sobleski wrote, “The Washington Commanders secondary will look significant different this fall, particularly at cornerback. Marshon Lattimore is healthy now after being a trade deadline acquisition from the New Orleans Saints during the 2024 campaign. Mike Sainristil should shift to his more natural position as a slot defender. That move will be propelled by Trey Amos’ inclusion to the lineup.”
Amos managed to see significant playing time with two powerhouse programs (Alabama and Ole Miss) over his final two years in college, but truly had a breakout year in 2024 with 50 total tackles and three interceptions with the Rebels last season.
Sobleski added, “The Commanders chose Amos with this year’s 61st overall pick. His skill set has starting outside corner written all over it. The 6’1″, 194-pounder was arguably the best press-man defender in the class. He has the right attitude to be placed on an island.”
Sobleski may be onto something with Amos instantly factoring into this Commanders’ secondary in 2025 because numerous reports have been producing positive observations of Amos through the first week of training camp.
NFL Reporter Steve Wyche recently said Trey Amos “has been the talk of camp” through the early practice sessions in Ashburn, VA.
Additionally, Zach Selby of Commanders.com wrote, “Amos, the team’s second-round pick in this year’s draft, has spent most of his time with the starting defense and locked down several of the team’s receivers. He had an impressive pass breakup against Luke McCaffrey at the goal line on Thursday and grabbed an interception off Daniels, although the play was ruled dead because of a flag on the defense.”
Could Trey Amos and Mike Sainristil Make This Commanders Secondary a Formidable Unit in 2025?
Selby also had encouraging things to report from Commanders training camp regarding second year cornerback Mike Sainristil, who had a solid rookie year with 90 total tackles and two interceptions in 2024.
Selby wrote, “The 2024 second-round pick is off to another strong start in camp and has made several plays in the first few days of camp. His best day was on Friday, as he grabbed an interception off a tipped pass from Jayden Daniels and ran it back for a touchdown. He also tackled KJ Osborn in the backfield on a play during team drills.”
If Lattimore can get healthy and return to his Pro Bowl form in 2024, and the combination of Sainristil and Amos’ strong start in training camp translates to the regular season — then this cornerback room could quickly turn into one of the better units in the NFC.
