Commanders resolve two glaring issues in respected analyst's 2025 NFL mock draft

The Washington Commanders have all the momentum in the world after an unexpected trip to the NFC Championship game in 2024. Adam Peters must ride that positivity through the offseason and into the 2025 campaign.

Peters and the new regime did an amazing job in their first draft together and have the chance to do the same this spring. This time around, the Commanders will be picking further down the pecking order, currently holding the No. 29 overall pick.

Including that first-round selection, the Commanders have six picks in the draft. This came after Washington sacrificed its fifth-rounder to acquire prolific wide receiver Deebo Samuel Sr.

Commanders rectify two big issues in Jordan Reid's latest 2025 NFL mock draft

Jordan Reid from ESPN pointed out two prospects that could give the team upgrades at positions of need in his latest mock draft. The first selection at No. 29 overall was the athletic edge rusher Mike Green out of Marshall.

"With his traits and burst, he's an edge presence who could play right away. Scouts I have talked to don't have a consensus grade or draft range on Green, as his projections continue to be all over the place."

Green is an athletic edge rusher, which will be a joy for Dan Quinn to work with to reach his potential. He did not test at the NFL Scouting Combine other than putting up 28 reps on the bench press, but the physical profile speaks for itself on the tape.

The Lafayette High School product stands at 6-foot-3 and 251 pounds. Green does not have the biggest build for an edge, but his speed makes up for it. He compiled 45 tackles, 59 pressures, and 17 sacks, which led the FBS, in 2024. This season earned him a 92.4 grade from Pro Football Focus.

Green has an elite get-off and bend, which makes sense due to his superb athleticism. He shows elite NFL-level flashes that show that he has the base profile an edge prospect needs to develop into a good player. His pass-rush toolbox is large, refining it further will improve his chances in the pros.

The biggest risk with Green is his off-the-field issues. He was a player for Virginia in 2021, but due to character issues and sexual assault allegations, he left the program to go to a smaller school. This robbed NFL scouts of seeing Green against better competition.

Reid's second selection for the Commanders would help bolster the running back room. The choice was running back Kaleb Johnson.

"A young running back is an underrated need, and Johnson would fit perfectly into Kliff Kingsbury's offense. His one-cut-and-accelerate style, combined with pass-catching upside, would help him thrive in Washington's scheme."

The prospect out of Iowa burst onto the scene in 2024, putting up 1,535 rushing yards and 21 touchdowns on 240 carries, good for 6.4 yards a carry. He also had 190 receiving yards and two scores on 22 receptions, earning an 86.5 grade from Pro Football Focus along the way.

He unfortunately did not test out well at the NFL Scouting Combine, proving that he is not a top-level athlete. However, his game acceleration stands out. He has good speed for his size at 6-foot-1 and 224 pounds.

Johnson's production proves that he is able to handle a bell-cow workload. He plays with immense patience, waiting for the hole he needs to make a cut and accelerate through. Even with the 4.57-second 40-yard dash time, he is still explosive on tape. His 43 runs of 10-plus yards in 2024 despite facing stacked boxes are a testament to that.

The Hamilton High School product can also be used in the receiving game, which would allow him to stay on the field longer. He does need to refine his pass-blocking game, though.

Making Johnson a selection on day two of the draft would make Jayden Daniels' weapons even better.
