Commanders Make Primetime Announcement After Securing Playoff Matchup

The Washington Commanders clinched a spot in the 2024-25 playoffs with a thrilling overtime victory over the Atlanta Falcons in Week 17. And with a win over the Dallas Cowboys in Week 18, the team secured its No. 6 seed in the NFC.

The Commanders are now set for a Wild Card round matchup against the No. 3 seed Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who secured their fourth consecutive NFC South title with a victory over the New Orleans Saints on Sunday afternoon.

Not only will the Commanders play in their first playoff game since 2020, they'll do so under the lights at Raymond James Stadium.

This postseason matchup was announced as the primetime "Sunday Night Football" contest of the Wild Card round. The game will kickoff at 8 p.m. EST on NBC.

"Wild Card Weekend. Sunday Night Football. Let's do this," the Commanders wrote on X.

Behind the stellar play of rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels and first-year Washington head coach Dan Quinn, the Commanders notched an impressive 12-5 regular-season record. The team will now look to translate this success into the postseason, a realm where the franchise has not excelled in recent years.

The last time the Commanders played in a postseason contest on Jan. 9, 2021, they fell to the visiting Buccaneers with a 31-23 final score. The franchise hasn't won a playoff game since they beat Tampa Bay on Jan. 7, 2006.

Opening betting lines list the Commanders as a 3-point underdog to the home-team Buccaneers.
