Commanders are in even better shape to make a big splash in free agency thanks to latest NFL news

Heading into Wednesday, the Washington Commanders held the third-most cap space in the NFL, per Over The Cap. At a little more than $75.2 million under a projected salary cap of $272.5 million, Adam Peters and Co. were poised to do some major damage in free agency.

If they choose to do so, of course. The key with OTC's salary cap projection, however, is it was widely suspected the cap would actually be $275 million in 2025, which would give the Commanders even more room to work with.

As it turns out, things are even better than projected. Per ESPN's Dan Graziano, the NFL informed teams on Wednesday that the 2025 salary cap will range from $277.5-$281.5 million. If it reaches the $281.5 ceiling, it'll represent a a $26.1 million increase from the 2024 ceiling, alone.

Therefore, the Commanders will receive anywhere from an extra $5-$9.5 million in cap space for the upcoming free agency period, giving them around $80.2-$84.7 million in total. When accounting for the projected cost of the Commanders' draft class, it's really about $73.5-$78 million in cap space, per Over The Cap.

That's obviously a nice chunk of change that can be used to re-sign key in-house free agents like Bobby Wagner, Jeremy Chinn, Dante Fowler Jr. etc. or bring in guys from the outside, whether it's a big splash or more of a depth move.

Either way, the Commanders are in even better shape than they were heading into free agency, which is a major positive when it's all said and done.
