Minicamps are underway in the NFL (and some are wrapping up as well) and while the New York Giants have their own quarterback situation to monitor, fans would be lying if they didn't keep up with former Giants quarterback Daniel Jones even a little. Jones signed with the Indianapolis Colts this offseason and will be competing with former fourth overall pick Anthony Richardson for the starting job in Indy.
According to Joel A. Erickson of Indy Star, the same issues that plagued Jones when he was on the field for the Giants have already been following him to his new team.
"A tireless worker with an accurate arm and plenty of mobility, Jones faltered in New York because of an inability to produce big plays," Erickson wrote in a recent column. "Indianapolis believes it can get more out of Jones as a deep ball thrower, and Wednesday’s practice was a sign of the inconsistency. Alec Pierce beat rookie cornerback Justin Walley deep on the first 11-on-11 ball of the day, and Jones made the right read, firing long for the NFL’s best deep threat last year, only to underthrow Pierce and give Walley time to recover and make the play."
NY Giants fans won't be shocked to hear Colts reporter's latest Daniel Jones update
Simply put -- Jones didn't work out as the starting quarterback in New York. He's trying to make it work with another team and he'll have his work cut out for him in trying to dethrone Richardson as the starter in Indy. Reading Erickson's latest write-up shows that Jones is still having problems finishing off those big plays. Big play ability is a huge part of a quarterback's game and it's somewhere Jones has struggled with for sure.
Giants fans watched this unfold during Jones' entire stint with the team and it was well past time to move on, which both sides did. Maybe Jones will unseat Richardson for the starting job in Indianapolis or maybe he'll be the backup. Giants fans are certainly glad that they can pivot to a different group of quarterbacks and hopefully, Jaxson Dart will soon make them forget all about the painful Daniel Jones years.
