Chiefs WR Couldn’t Buy His Roster Spot Even if He Wanted to

Bailey Zappe NFL Draft 2022: Scouting Report for Western Kentucky QB

The Kansas City Chiefs' issues at wide receiver in the 2024 season are well-documented. After injuries to both Rashee Rice and Marquise 'Hollywood' Brown, the WR room lacked the depth that general manager Brett Veach and head coach Andy Reid envisioned when they put the roster together.

While that allowed opportunities for other players to shine like Xavier Worthy, it became obvious that the Chiefs needed more juice out of the group. Now, Rice, Worthy, and Brown are expected to be fully healthy to join incumbent blocking standout JuJu Smith-Schuster and fourth-round rookie Jalen Royals.

That leaves one or two spots for several players, and one beloved fan-favorite has almost no chance of making the 53-man team this fall.

Chiefs WR Justyn Ross Has No Chance at Making Final Roster

Justyn Ross, who has spent time both on the practice squad and on the active roster over the last couple of seasons, appears to be the odd man out when you evaluate this from a bird's-eye view. Nikko Remigio and Skyy Moore are seemingly battling for that final spot, to say nothing of OTAs standout Tyquan Thornton.

Ross is only 25 years old, so he has plenty of room to grow into a larger role. It just doesn't appear that role will come in Kansas City. Originally a Clemson star before health issues derailed his career, the 6-foot-4, 210-pound wideout has all of the physical traits you look for. It's unclear why, but he hasn't been able to parlay his early success into a legitimate NFL job.

Training camp is less than a month away, so perhaps Ross flips the script and forces Reid's hand. That appears unlikely at this stage, though, despite how good Ross typically looks at practice.

Unless Remigio, Moore, and Thornton all collapse during OTAs, it looks like Ross will either be looking at another year on the practice squad or finding a new gig elsewhere.
