No team in the NFL has a perfect roster and therefore will see weaknesses on their team. For the Kansas City Chiefs, their weaknesses heading into training camp this year are on the offensive line and in the back field. This isn't news to anyone considering the issues the team had in both spots last year.
At offensive line, the left side was a nightmare with a rotating door at left tackle. Joe Thuney finally gave the Chiefs the best possible solution there but that left a hole at left guard, where Mike Calinedo did the best he could.
At running back, Isiah Pacheco was injured early in the season and even when he returned later in the year, he wasn't the same guy he had been during his first two years. Kareem Hunt filled in admirably but the Chiefs didn't put much effort into upgrading the running back position so fans might find themselves worrying if it'll be improved from a year ago.
Chiefs have two massive question marks as they enter training camp
The good news is that the Chiefs have taken strides to fix their o-line. They signed Jaylon Moore to a contract in free agency and while Moore hasn't been a full-time starter, he would fill in for Trent Williams while in San Francisco and did decently when called upon.
If Moore doesn't play as well as the Chiefs are hoping for, then they also have first-round rookie Josh Simmons to fall back on. The Ohio State product was injured early on during the 2024 season but Andy Reid has said that he expects him to be healthy enough in time for the start of training camp next month.
As for left guard, the hope is that former second-round pick Kingsley Suamataia can slide into that role after struggling at left tackle. If Suamataia can play well in a new position and either Moore or Simmons can help keep Patrick Mahomes upright at left tackle, there's a lot of hope for the Chiefs' o-line moving forward.
As mentioned, running back didn't get the kind of makeover that the left side of the o-line did. Pacheco and Hunt are coming back for 2025 and the Chiefs spent a seventh-round pick on Brashard Smith. Maybe Smith shows something during camp or perhaps the Chiefs add another running back at some point between now and the start of the season. Either way, this is a unit that has to perform better this year.
