Wide receiver was going to be a huge need for the Kansas City Chiefs this offseason. That need worsened as their top receiver in Xavier Worthy was arrested.
Luckily for the Chiefs, they have a newly released wide receiver option that they can look to sign this 2025 NFL Free Agency period.
With the recent release of Tyler Lockett from the Seattle Seahawks, he becomes a prime free agent target for the Chiefs to add.
Why the Seattle Seahawks Cut Tyler Lockett
Before cutting Lockett, the team was $13.5 million over the cap. With still having Jaxson Smith-Njigba, and Lockett being 32 years old, it makes it easier for Seattle to move off him.
Add in the fact that Lockett was carrying a cap figure of $30.9 million, and Seattle saved $17 million by cutting him. It is a move that makes sense for a team attempting to get younger and build even further heading into Mike Macdonald’s second season.
Why Tyler Lockett Makes Sense for the Kansas City Chiefs
Despite a down season, Lockett still averaged 12.2 yards per reception last season and had a 70.0% reception rate. That consistency and reliability will also play a crucial role in why the Chiefs need to sign him after his release from Seattle.
As Patrick Mahomes and the offense look to bounce back from a poor showing in the Super Bowl against the Philadelphia Eagles, they will need ample talent on the offense.
Lockett brings the experience and reliability that would greatly help the Chiefs offense. Lockett would become a go-to target for Mahomes, while also helping a young wide receiver room with Rashee Rice and Worthy improve both on and off the field.
