Chiefs Take ‘Long-Term’ View In Latest Mock

The Kansas City Chiefs might not just be in the mood for a quick fix at left tackle, with the franchise perhaps also keeping an eye on the future.

With guard Joe Thuney moved out to left tackle last season, he is now a Chicago Bear, leaving the incoming Jaylon Moore, who only has 12 career starts to his name in four years with the San Francisco 49ers, as Patrick Mahomes' blindside protector.

For most, that doesn't instill the utmost of confidence after Mahomes is coming off a season that saw him sacked the most times in his career (36), and that has led to many mock drafts having the Chiefs take a left tackle.

And for Chris Trapasso of CBS Sports, that is exactly what the franchise does, getting Josh Simmons from Ohio State.

"Simmons would've likely been picked much higher than this had he stayed healthy in 2024, and he's an ideal long-term project with potentially enormous upside at a valuable position in Kansas City," Trapasso writes.

If a left tackle is selected, that will give the Chiefs many options at the position.

Wanya Morris and Kingsley Suamataia failed to nail down a starting role, although Kingsley could shift inside to left guard, and then we have Moore and now Simmons.

That likely leaves someone as the odd man out.

As for Moore, could Simmons be seen as his replacement? After all, he only signed a two-year deal this offseason, and with Simmons' potential being lauded, it isn't totally unreasonable to think that the rookie could step in if things go south with Jaylon.

Either way, it appears that the Chiefs aren't set on their left tackle spot just yet, and seem intent on creating as much competition as possible.
