Chiefs Sign Failed Raiders QB on Thursday

The Las Vegas Raiders struggled to have success on offense last season in large part due to sub-par quarterback play. Veteran signal-caller Gardner Minshew was brought in last offseason to compete with second-year player Aidan O'Connell, but both proved to be unworthy of a starting job in the NFL.

Minshew was benched early in the season but was forced to return to the starting lineup after O'Connell suffered an injury. Then, Minshew broke his collarbone and never played another snap for the franchise as the team released him officially on Wednesday afternoon. However, on Thursday, NFL Insider Ian Rapoport reported  that Minshew was signing a one-year deal with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Kansas City is moving on from second-string quarterback Carson Wentz this offseason and it seems that head coach Andy Reid sees something in Minshew as a backup to Patrick Mahomes. He has had his share of success in the NFL but his performance last season with the Raiders left something to be desired.

However, Las Vegas is footing the bill for Minshew's contract this season because they released him before his two-year deal was up, so he is a cheap option for the Chiefs. The Raiders just traded for Seattle Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith last week, and O'Connell has a bit more upside than Minshew does, so the writing was on the wall for him anyway. Now, he'll remain in the AFC West playing for a bitter rival.
