Chiefs sign cornerback Steven Nelson to practice squad

Over the weekend, word spread that former Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Steven Nelson would visit the club on Monday. Head coach Andy Reid sounded optimistic about the meeting during his Monday afternoon Zoom press conference.

“He was a good player when he was here,” said Reid of Nelson. “He came out of Oregon State with the ability to return and play corner, and then he developed into a starting corner in the league and had a nice career for the last how many years.”

Kansas City selected the 31-year-old in the third round of the 2015 NFL Draft. Nelson played for the team through 2018. He then had stops in Pittsburgh (2019-20), Philadelphia (2021) and Houston (2022-23) before retiring this past June.

He now has an interest in returning to the field.

“It was [the] ability to add a little depth to that spot, and we’ll just how things work out — see kind of where he’s at [Monday],” added Reid. “He would be a welcome addition if it all works out.”

Apparently, it all went well, with the Chiefs announcing that they had signed Nelson to their practice squad. Kansas City typically gives new players at least a week to settle in before a potential elevation to its active roster.
