Chiefs shuffle practice squad players again, releasing a 2023 trade acquisition and a veteran defender

The Kansas City Chiefs' 16-man practice squad continues to see changes ahead of Week 1 of the 2024 NFL season.

The team announced four practice squad moves on Saturday. That includes the previously reported signing of DT Marlon Tuipulotu, but also three previously unreported transactions.

In addition to Tuipulotu, the Chiefs re-signed RB Emani Bailey to the practice squad. That means they needed to create two spots on the practice squad, and in turn, released a pair of interior defensive linemen. First, they released veteran DT Matt Dickerson, who has been on and off the roster and practice squad over the past few seasons. He had a good training camp and preseason, so that move is a slight surprise. Finally, the team also released DT Neil Farrell Jr.,  who was a trade acquisition via the Las Vegas Raiders ahead of the 2023 NFL season.

Dickerson appeared in 12 regular season games for the Chiefs in 2023, while Farrell Jr. appeared in three regular season games. The players combined for 16 total tackles and two tackles for loss.

Why no transaction to add CB Eric Scott Jr. to the practice squad?

One of the more surprising moves the Chiefs made recently was the decision to waive CB Eric Scott Jr. just two days after claiming him from the Dallas Cowboys.  We expected the team to attempt to re-sign Scott to the practice squad, but it appears that won't be happening, at least not right now. It's unclear if he was claimed on waivers at this time, but it sounds like the decision to claim Scott was a way for the Chiefs to hedge their bets as they released several DBs from the 53-man roster. It seems the team anticipated more of their players getting claimed or picked up.
