Mike Caliendo's late-season starts at left guard turned into an unexpected audition for a coveted full-time role in the NFL

Kansas City Chiefs guard Mike Caliendo has liked how Kingsley Suamataia has made the transition from left tackle to left guard.

The Kansas City Chiefs' offensive line will be a big watch this offseason, and more so when training camp begins, as the unit is perhaps the most under pressure to perform in 2025.

With Joe Thuney now a Chicago Bear, a spot at guard has opened up, and it is one that left tackle Kingsley Suamataia is going to get first crack at...but Mike Caliendo is also putting his hand up.

The pair didn't have the best of seasons last year, but are looking to turn the page, and for Caliendo, he's liked how Kingsley has made the transition to guard this offseason.

“He's been awesome,” Caliendo said. “He's been really focused on perfecting his craft, and it's been fun to watch him get in there at guard and really do a great job. It's fun helping him out, and he's helping me out at the same time, so it's been good.”

Granted, we have only seen OTAs and minicamp, so it isn't exactly a fair evaluation of how well Suamataia has adjusted...that will come in training camp.

The offensive line, and in particular the left side, will be completely new for Patrick Mahomes as he looks to avenge last season's Super Bowl loss.

Jaylon Moore and Josh Simmons are the new tackles, but either Suamataia or Caliendo will be the guard, so Mahomes has a lot of moving pieces to navigate as training camp gets underway next month.

However, in a positive development, it seems Suamataia is adjusting to his new role rather well at this early stage of the offseason.

However, the ultimate test still awaits.
