Chiefs Proposed To Send 4th Year CB To Most Corner-Needy Team

The Kansas City Chiefs made up for their lack of free agent additions on defense by adding three players on that side of the ball on the first two days of April’s draft.

One of picks, cornerback Nohl Williams, could have a knock on effect other members of the position group, where the Chiefs have a litany of options.

And given that, ESPN’s Seth Walder asserts that the Chiefs could dump off one of their CBs to the team that most needs help on the exterior of their secondary in the NFL – the Miami Dolphins.

Chiefs Predicted To Trade Contract-Year CB For Day 3 Pick

“Williams is a depth corner for the Chiefs,” Walder wrote on Wednesday, “who already have Trent McDuffie, Jaylen Watson, Kristian Fulton (signed in March) and Nohl Williams (2025 third-round pick). Joshua Williams, who is scheduled to make $3.2 million this year, was even left off ESPN’s 53-man roster projection at the start of training camp.

Williams does have some encouraging numbers over his first three seasons. Across 769 coverage snaps, he has allowed 0.9 yards per snap — better than average — and 0.6 over the past two years, albeit in a small sample.”

Walder believes that in exchange for Williams, the Dolphins would send back a sixth round pick in 2027.

The Dolphins, on their end, would certainly appreciate more options at cornerback, as Walder also notes, after their best option – nickel, Kader Kohou – suffered a partially torn ACL tear that will result in him missing the entire season.

“Miami’s cornerback room was bleak even before Kader Kohou suffered a season-ending knee injury earlier this week. With Kohou down, that leaves the Dolphins with a group that includes newly signed Jack Jones, Cam Smith, Storm Duck, rookie fifth-round pick Jason Marshall Jr. and Ethan Bonner as options to compete for outside corner (with another recent signing, Mike Hilton, presumably Kohou’s replacement in the slot). The group leaves plenty to be desired.”

Why Would The Chiefs Decide To Trade Williams?

The Chiefs can only carry so many members of the secondary. Particularly for a team which has always been built from the front – both on offense and defense.

Jaylen Watson, Trent McDuffie and the currently-injured Kristian Fulton are set to start, whilst the rookie, Nohl Williams, and Nazeeh Johnson, will feature alongside Joshua Williams as backup options on the perimeter.

All of Watson, Johnson and Williams have their contracts up at the end of the season; given that Watson is a starter, he should be safe. After that, it is a coin flip between the other two, and given his greater starting experience – Williams has 12 starts to Johnson’s 6 – he could be worth more on the trade market.

Much of this also depends on the extent of Fulton’s knee injury, which has landed him on the PUP list to start training camp. There has not been a released date for his return, but it seems possible that he will be around to start the season.
