Rumors about Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid possibly retiring emerged shortly after the New England Patriots parted ways with Bill Belichick this past winter and then hovered over the Chiefs through and beyond their Super Bowl LVIII win over the San Francisco 49ers.
Chiefs owner Clark Hunt addressed the topic with his club at 7-0 this fall.
For a piece published Tuesday, Hunt told ESPN's Jeremy Fowler that Reid could "absolutely" remain the Chiefs head coach "for another five years." The three-time Super Bowl champion turns 67 years old in March 2025 and, per Fowler, is in good health.
"He certainly seems rejuvenated, I would say, by the success of the team in the last few years and having one of the most special quarterbacks of all time," Hunt said about Reid. "I have no sense that he has any interest in retiring any time soon, which is fantastic."
Reid's legacy as an all-time great coach is already secure, but he nevertheless has numerous reasons to want to keep working through the rest of the 2020s.
As Hunt alluded to, quarterback Patrick Mahomes is already a three-time Super Bowl Most Valuable Player at the age of 29 and is locked down via a contract that expires after the 2031 season.
Under Reid, the Chiefs are attempting to become the first team to ever three-peat as Super Bowl champions. According to Alex Kennedy of Pro Football Network, Reid's 291 career wins are good for the fourth most in NFL history (regular season and postseason combined). To compare, Don Shula tops the list with 347 victories.
During his chat with Fowler, Hunt acknowledged that "any leader needs to be thinking about succession." After all, it's possible that Reid could decide to ride off into the sunset of retirement if he again gets his hands on the Vince Lombardi Trophy this coming February.
As of Tuesday afternoon, DraftKings Sportsbook listed the unbeaten Chiefs as the overall betting favorites at +400 odds to win Super Bowl LIX.
For now, Reid will simply focus on leading Kansas City into the upcoming "Monday Night Football" home game against the 4-4 Tampa Bay Buccaneers. DraftKings Sportsbook had the Chiefs as 8.5-point favorites for that matchup on Tuesday.
