The Kansas City Chiefs are 3-0 beating three good teams, as they are off to a great start in pursuit of their third straight Super Bowl. But their two star players on offense Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce have been off to a pretty poor start by their standards. Kelce has been especially poor by his standards, but head coach Andy Reid is taking the blame.
Kansas City Chiefs Start Slow And Are 3-0
It is truly scary for the NFL that the back-to-back champs are undefeated against three solid teams and are not really playing well by their standards. Kelce has been a non-factor this season only getting 69 yards so far in all three games, and Mahomes has also not looked like his usual ‘best quarterback of all time’ self.
Mahomes finished Sunday night’s game with an OK stat line in their 22-17 win over the Falcons. He totaled 26 of 39 passes, 217 yards, two touchdowns, and his fourth interception of the season. His total of 5 touchdowns to 4 interceptions, not to mention the ones that get called back, is the worst start in any season of his career.
On Monday, head coach Reid addressed the slow start for his top players and he credited his quarterback for the ability to win games in these circumstances and make the right plays at the end of the game. Reid took accountability for his quarterback’s mediocre play to start this season:
“I thought he kind of got in a rhythm in the second half,” Reid said. “A lot of that is my responsibility to get him into that rhythm earlier. And so, we’ll go back and discuss all that and get that taken care of.”
The Chiefs are yet to score 27 points in a game this year which used to be routine for them as an offense. Mahomes so far is averaging 7.2 yards per attempt with an 89.9 quarterback rating and 4.3 interception percentage, all of those are shocking numbers for Mahomes.
While Reid took accountability, so did Mahoems, which is one of the reasons this team is able to win even in these circumstances consistently.
“I feel like I haven’t played very well, and that’s not a stats thing,” Mahomes said Monday, via NFL.com. “I just feel like I’m missing opportunities whenever they’re out there and not throwing the ball in the exact spot I want it to be at. So it’s about me getting back to my fundamentals, putting our guys in the right position, and then we’ve got to execute at a higher level offensively.”
There is no reason for concern for the Chiefs as the season is just getting underway and if they continue to get better, no team will have a chance at stopping the threepeat.
“There are a bunch of things that we can clean up,” Reid said, “but he’ll be all right.”
