Chiefs Insider Reveals ‘Biggest Winner’ From Day 1 of Training Camp

New Chiefs Addition Might Become Instant Starter at Training Camp

The Kansas City Chiefs hosted media and fans for their first official training camp practice of the 2025 season on July 22, and quarterback Patrick Mahomes and star wide receiver Rashee Rice picked back up right where they left off before the latter’s knee injury in 2024.

“The biggest winner of today’s practice is Rashee Rice, who was the most-targeted receiver for Patrick Mahomes,” new ESPN beat reporter Nate Taylor (formerly of The Athletic) relayed on X. He said this while sharing a video highlight from Fox 4 KC’s Harold R. Kuntz.

Mahomes and Rice have always displayed an instant chemistry on the football field, pretty much since the former SMU pass-catcher first entered the league in 2023. Day one of Chiefs training camp was no different.

“We missed Rashee [Rice] on those crossers so bad last year. Unguardable,” A-to-Z Sports Kansas City contributor Nick Roesch commented on a different training camp clip (via KSHB 41’s Matt Foster).

Mahomes and Rice appeared to be in midseason form on Tuesday, despite Rice’s recent recovery from knee surgery, as well as the latest on his legal situation.

If Rice does get suspended by the NFL in 2025, which now appears likely, the Chiefs will hope that it’s a lesser number of games. Because once Rice is cleared to play, this duo looks like it’s prepared to do some major damage together on the field.

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes Sidesteps Question on Potential Rashee Rice Extension

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes connects on a pass to Rashee Rice.

GettyKansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes (#15) and wide receiver Rashee Rice (#4) are showing chemistry again early on at training camp.

While speaking at the podium after practice, Mahomes was asked about the potential of a Rice suspension this year. But the media-savvy athlete didn’t give reporters too much to work with on the subject, as usual.

“Yeah, I think we just come out here and practice hard every day,” Mahomes responded. “You can’t worry about stuff that’s going to happen down the line. You worry about — how can you get better this day. How can you get better the next day. And that’s how we go about our mindset, regardless.”

“All that stuff will handle itself,” the Chiefs QB eventually added. Concluding: “I’m sure the coaches can speak more to it, but at the end of the day, we’re going to go out there and attack the practice and attack the day so that we’re prepared to play that next day.”

Mahomes has developed into an expert-level signal-caller on the field, but he’s become just as elite at the podium, learning from head coach Andy Reid in that regard.

The Chiefs won’t complain or make too much noise about the Rice suspension. Whatever happens, they’ll be ready for it, and they’ll adapt accordingly as they always do.

Chiefs WR/Returner Nikko Remigio Credited With ‘Play of the Day’ at Training Camp, Xavier Worthy Also Connects Deep

Aside from Rice, fan favorite wide receiver/returner Nikko Remigio and 2024 first-rounder Xavier Worthy were both standouts due to highlight-reel link-ups with Mahomes.

“Nikko Remigio makes a diving catch deep down the middle of the field during 11-on-11. Play of the day so far,” Chiefs team reporter Matt McMullen posted on X.

A-to-Z Sports Kansas City’s Charles Goldman followed up on Remigio’s big moment of day one, noting that “it’s unclear and doesn’t quite matter whether it was with the first-team, second-team, or third-team offense.” Adding: “Remigio needs to become trusted on offense in addition to his special teams role if he’s to make the 53-man roster in this competitive wide receiver room.”

As for Worthy, the speed-demon big play threat finally connected with Mahomes on one of their deep shots that they’ve been practicing all spring. The Chiefs’ social media team shared a video of the big gainer on X.
