Chiefs’ Injury List Reaches Double Digits at Training Camp

The Kansas City Chiefs began Tuesday’s training camp practice with a longer injury list than the previous update, and that injury total rose even higher by the end of the day on July 29.

New Chiefs WR Hollywood Brown exits preseason opener with shoulder injury

“Common for this part of camp, but the injury list is growing,” Arrowhead Pride beat reporter Pete Sweeney noted after practice. He then included a “rundown,” which named the following players and their ailments:

  • PUP List: CB Kristian Fulton (knee).
  • Non-Football Injury List: DE BJ Thompson.
  • Missed Practice: TE Jake Briningstool (out since 7/26 with a hamstring injury), CB Darius Rush (out since 7/27 with a hamstring injury), LB Jeffrey Bassa (out since 7/29 with an ankle sprain), CB Eric Scott Jr. (out since 7/29 with a hamstring injury), S Deon Bush (out since 7/29 with a hamstring injury).
  • Left Practice Early on July 29: WR Hollywood Brown (ankle), WR Skyy Moore (hamstring), LB Cooper McDonald (illness).

If you include McDonald, that puts the Chiefs’ current injury list up to double digits, at 10 total.

Notably, Sweeney also relayed that “WR Xavier Worthy looked like he banged his head on the first play of practice, but returned after he was evaluated in the tent.”

Head coach Andy Reid simply reiterated that Worthy “banged his head” after practice, but did not elaborate further.

Chiefs HC Andy Reid & NFL Insider Provide Updates on Hollywood Brown’s Injury After Practice

After Brown missed the majority of his inaugural campaign in Kansas City due to a preseason injury, any health scare involving him certainly makes your ears perk up. Having said that, this ankle injury appears to be minor, according to FOX Sports NFL insider Jordan Schultz.

“Sources: Chiefs WR Marquise ‘Hollywood’ Brown, who left practice on a cart with a lower leg injury, avoided anything serious and is expected to be back on the field as early as tomorrow,” Schultz reported on July 29.

Similarly, Reid noted that he doesn’t “think” Brown’s injury is “too bad.”

The Chiefs HC did couch that by saying that he had not seen Brown yet or evaluated his injury. Adding, “we’ll see how it goes,” in typical Andy Reid fashion.

If Brown and Moore miss any practice time, it should open the door for other roster hopeful wide receivers to emerge, including Tyquan Thornton, Nikko Remigio, Jason Brownlee, Elijhah Badger, Mac Dalena and Jimmy Holiday.

With a Rashee Rice suspension looming ahead of Week 1, there could be an extra roster spot or two to be had at wide receiver.

Chiefs Training Camp Highlights From July 29

Sweeney always does a nice job of detailing what happened in each practice. Below were some of his 11-on-11 notes from July 29.

“TE Noah Gray caught two passes from QB Patrick Mahomes in the initial 11-on-11 period,” Sweeney began on X. “[Jaylen] Watson broke up a [Gardner] Minshew pass intended for WR Skyy Moore.”

Continuing later: “The next 11-on-11 period is where Brown tweaked his ankle. It looked like he jumped up to make a touchdown catch but landed awkwardly. Worthy had a score on an end-around and Mahomes threw a TD to TE Travis Kelce. LB Nick Bolton broke up Mahomes’ pass to end the period.”

“In Mahomes’ next turn (11-on-11), he hit WR Jalen Royals on a crosser, with Royals beating S Bryan Cook for the score,” Sweeney relayed. “WR JuJu Smith-Schuster (called the WR room leader by Andy Reid after practice) made a leaping touchdown catch. QB Bailey Zappe threw a TD to TE Robert Tonyan.

“Continuing in RZ 11-on-11, Mahomes threw TDs to Royals and Moore, who had a nice diving catch just inside the back left pylon for his score to get a rise out of the crowd. On the final play here, rolling to his right, I think I caught Mahomes faked a behind-the-back like an NBA player before dishing to Gray.”

Mahomes’ 7-on-7 touchdowns went to Thornton, Kelce and Gray (three times), per Sweeney, with Minshew’s 7-on-7 TDs going to Holiday, Remigio and Tonyan.
