The Kansas City Chiefs fell apart in the Super Bowl against the Philadelphia Eagles, especially when it comes to both the offensive and defensive lines. But, you watched it, you don't need me to tell you that -- you lived through the pain.
However, one loss doesn't stop this team from trying to continue to win Super Bowls -- it surely didn't when they lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers; they would go on to win two in a row. This is a resilient team, and even with what they have right now, they will still be considered championship contenders, and they should be. They do still have the best player in football in Patrick Mahomes and the best coach in Andy Reid.
But, even so, the Chiefs still have some things that have to be fixed, or else what happened to them in the Super Bowl will happen far more often. The offensive line has to be fixed, and now they are set even further back after having to trade Joe Thuney to the Chicago Bears.
They signed Jaylon Moore in free agency, a former offensive tackle for the San Francisco 49ers, but they still need help. They could walk out of the 2025 NFL Draft with both an offensive tackle and an offensive guard. Even after signing Moore, general manager Brett Veach is making it known that he isn't going to stop there if it means fixing their biggest flaw.
"The goal and the objective are always to position yourself and your team so that when you get to the draft, you can unlock the full potential of your board and not have to be stressed out and take the best player available," Veach said on a Zoom call on Thursday. "I think, though, over the years, one thing that we’ve shown is that we’re going to put a high priority on offensive line and defensive line, and you start off with Jaylon Moore.
"I don’t think it’s a secret that we want to get some stability there at the left tackle position. He’s a guy that I think the only downside was just the lack of starts during his career. Now, the next step is to maintain that level of play throughout the course and duration of a season, but again, we’re super excited to add him and hopefully provide some stability to the left side of the line. We’ll continue in the draft to address the offensive line."
This offensive tackle class is very top-heavy, and even then, after about five or seven guys, it falls off pretty quickly. So, if they are going to take one, it's easy to believe that it would be early in the 2025 NFL Draft. And, hey, Veach could trade up, as even he acknowledged on Thursday that he has a tendency to do so and be aggressive.
If the Chiefs did in fact do that, or even if they took on in the first round, there are about three guys who are being linked to the Chiefs the most in Ohio State's Josh Simmons, Oregon's Josh Conerly Jr, and Texas' Kelvin Banks. But, it's primarily the first two that we are hearing the most buzz about.
If the Chiefs walk away with any of those three, you have to love the outlook of the tackle position for the next two years, at least.
