Chiefs Get Unfortunate Injury News On Controversial Rising Star

The Kansas City Chiefs‘ primary concern with Rashee Rice is no doubt his impending suspension from the league after being sentenced to 30 days in jail and five years of deferred probation back in July.

But Rice gave the team more to think about ahead of what will likely be a decent-sized suspension from the league in 2025, as he sat out practice on Wednesday due to a groin injury, per Pete Sweeney of Arrowhead Pride.

Sweeney then clarified the broader context of the injury, noting that Rice was present at practice but was not on the field doing drills with the other players.

A little context here: Rice attended practice and worked with trainers off to the side. He seemed to be working through it. Better-case scenario than absent.

What Is The Prognosis For Rice’s Injury?

“Groin issues” are not classically defined injuries that have a clear layoff time-range.

The Chiefs have not updated his injury status officially, or released details of the specifics of his medical concern. However, given that he was at least at practice – even if he did not participate – and the team have not felt there is major cause to give notice to reporters and media, suggests it may be – optimistically, at least – not an ultra-worrying issue.

Groin strains, which could be what Rice is dealing with the moment, have a big range of return dates, depending on the severity of the injury. But right now, whilst things don’t look ultra scary, there is not much we can reliably say with confidence about Rice’s medical condition.

Rice is already coming off a 2024 season that was cut to just four games after a blistering 24-reception, 288 yard start, due to a knee injury suffered against the Los Angeles Chargers – so the team will be keen to ensure that one of their top young players stays as healthy as possible ahead of his third season in the NFL.

How Long Will Rice Be Suspended For?

With what we know right now, the most likely outcome for Rice is that he is healthy and ready to go well before the end of his expected upcoming suspension in 2025. Speaking on Monday, Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio gave an approximation for how long he believes the team will be without their up-and-coming offensive star.

“There’s an argument to be made that it should be a short suspension.” Florio stated on Monday, “I think the difference is this is on video. Any other incident you point to and say, ‘Oh, that guy got one game. That guy got two games. That guy got three games.’ It’s not on video. This thing’s on video….I think it’s between six and 10. People get upset when I say that, but I think it’s going to be somewhere between six and 10.”

Although Florio also pointed out that there is a possibility that Rice starts the season, and then gets suspended after a couple of games, the league will likely try their best to resolve the situation ahead of the start of the regular season in just under a month’s time.

Right now, the former SMU man will be focused on overcoming his groin injury and getting back to a full bill of health.
