The Kansas City Chiefs were humiliated in Super Bowl LIX, as the Philadelphia Eagles sent a barrage of relentless pressure, sacking Patrick Mahomes six times, logging 11 quarterback hits, and leaving the three-time Super Bowl MVP running for his life through much of a 40-22 blowout.

Perhaps what was most impressive about the Eagles’ dominance along the defensive line, and so worrisome for the Chiefs, is the fact that Philadelphia rarely blitzed. Vic Fangio’s defense ambushed Mahomes, largely by sending just four rushers.

That spells big trouble for the Chiefs’ offensive line which was exposed as inadequate on the international stage of Super Bowl Sunday.

Worse, the Chiefs have some big decisions to make along the offensive line, in addition to likely needing to prioritize selecting multiple offensive tackles during April’s 2025 NFL Draft.

Will Kansas City Chiefs Break the Bank to Keep Trey Smith?

Chiefs offensive guard Trey Smith is one of the premier players across the league at the position, and is set to be one of the most coveted free agents on the market this offseason.

That is, if general manager Brett Veach and the Chiefs allow him to hit free agency.

Ben Solak of ESPN suggests that the Chiefs could prioritize keeping Smith in Kansas City, signing him to a record-setting contract in the process.

“The Chiefs will make Smith the highest-paid guard in football,” Solak writes for ESPN as his big prediction for Kansas City. “Beating out the four-year, $84 million deal the Eagles gave to Landon Dickerson last season with a five-year, $110 million deal of their own. That will put the entire line from left guard to right tackle under big contracts, and the Eagles will enter next season with Kingsley Suamataia and a rookie battling it out for the starting left tackle job.”

Smith was stellar throughout the season and is likely to be the premier guard available when the new league year opens.

Kansas City’s top priority when it comes to retooling the roster and staying in the Super Bowl conversation is going to have to be committing major resources along what became one of the league’s most porous offensive lines.

That could start with committing top of the market money to keeping Smith in the fold.
