The Kansas City Chiefs are expected to make an investment in running back this offseason as part of an overall offensive overhaul to get younger and faster. The need for an infusion of talent is also clear in the backfield, and it's clear the Chiefs are doing their homework with the latest rumors from the 2025 NFL Combine in Indianapolis.
Reporter Ryan Fowler has word that Ollie Gordon, an accomplished running back out of Oklahoma State, has drawn interest from a number of NFL franchises. Meetings scheduled at the Combine with Gordon include the Denver Broncos and L.A. Chargers, which means that three of the four AFC West teams are interested in him further in this year's draft class.
Gordon also reportedly drew interest from the Indianapolis Colts, Miami Dolphins, and Pittsburgh Steelers.
The Chiefs are doing their homework on running back prospects in this year's draft class.
Gordon finished seventh in Heisman Trophy voting in 2023 and was the Big 12's Offensive Player of the Year after earning over 1,700 yards rushing and 21 touchdowns. He followed that up with 190 carries for 880 yards and 13 touchdowns in 2024, his senior season. There is a suspicion of DUI arrest from last summer that will be something he needs to explain to NFL reps.
The Chiefs have Isiah Pacheco returning in 2025 to help anchor the backfield, but injury concerns are a cloud hanging overhead going forward. If Pacheco were in more of a 1B role instead of a lead back position, that would be much healthier for the Chiefs' offense. The team was overly dependent upon Kareem Hunt last season as an aging free agent back who was still available after the start of the season.
Expect the Chiefs to lean into the position at some point in the NFL Draft, perhaps even in the earlier rounds. Check out our Big Board with prospect profiles here, including Kaleb Johnson, Ashton Jeanty, Omarion Hampton, and more.
