Chiefs add veteran running back, claim defensive back in slew of moves following cutdown day

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - The Kansas City Chiefs made a slew of roster moves a day after the NFL’s cutdown deadline for 53-man rosters.

After the Denver Broncos released veteran running back Samaje Perine, Kansas City signed the 28-year-old to a deal that requires him to be on the 53-man roster. The deal was first reported by NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo.

Perine, a product of Oklahoma, appeared in 17 games for the Denver Broncos in 2023, rushing 53 times for 238 yards and a touchdown. He also had 50 receptions for 455 yards and could offer the Chiefs a reliable option as a pass-catcher out of the backfield in 2024.

Kansas City also made a waiver claim for help in its defensive backs room. After the Dallas Cowboys waived cornerback Eric Scott Jr., Kansas City claimed the product of Southern Miss.

Scott Jr., a native of Basehor, Kansas, will also be added to the active roster, an addition that will require a corresponding move for Kansas City. Scott Jr. was drafted by the Cowboys in the sixth round of the 2023 NFL Draft with a pick Kansas City traded to Dallas.

The Chiefs announced several of the roster moves Wednesday afternoon, and said cornerback Nic Jones was waived from the 53-man roster following Scott Jr.’s addition.

Several players the Chiefs let go of Tuesday to cut its roster to 53 were re-signed a day later to the practice squad. That list included safety Deon Bush, wide receivers Nikko Remigio and Justyn Ross, among others. The full list of practice squad signings is as follows:

  • RB: Emani Bailey

The Chiefs also said offensive tackle Chu Godrick was signed to the practice squad through the international player program.

Kansas City also signed former New England Patriots quarterback Bailey Zappe to the practice squad, according to a report from Jordan Schultz. The move came after Kansas City waived quarterback Ian Book on Monday and Chris Oladokun on Tuesday.

Among the Chiefs players who were waived Tuesday, undrafted rookie free agent linebacker Curtis Jacobs was the only to be claimed by another team. Jacobs was picked up by the Patriots.

Former Welsh rugby star Louis Rees-Zammit, who was cut Tuesday by Kansas City, reportedly is working on a deal to sign with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
