The second season of the highly anticipated Netflix docuseries Quarterback premiered yesterday, and fans are having a merry time binge-watching. The new season centers the spotlight on the Detroit Lions’ Jared Goff, Cincinnati Bengals’ Joe Burrow, and Atlanta Falcons’ Kirk Cousins.
In the short time since the new season dropped on everyone’s Netflix screens, the meme fest has already broken out. The show, produced by Omaha Productions, 2 PM Productions, and the NFL Films, has already won hearts with the detailed insights into the highs and lows of these loved quarterbacks in the past season.
One of the anecdotes that has coveted hearts and headlines alike in the past few hours came from the third episode, Beautiful Minds. The main angle of the episode is Goff, who had a stellar regular season, finishing second behind Burrow in the passing yards and fourth in passing touchdowns.
While the series celebrates Goff’s sharp football intellect and leadership, it’s his light-hearted jab at a certain seven-time Super Bowl champion that’s fueling headlines this time around.
In Beautiful Minds, viewers are taken behind the scenes of the Detroit Lions’ dominant Week 6 performance against the Dallas Cowboys. The Lions dismantled the Cowboys with a 47-9 blowout, with Goff delivering 18 of 25 passes for 315 yards and three touchdowns. Furthermore, the quarterback was highly praised for the perfect balance, poise, and execution exerted by his offensive unit.
The impressive showing didn’t go unnoticed, especially by Tom Brady, who was in the broadcast booth that week for Fox Sports. The former Patriots and Buccaneers quarterback, now serving as a commentator, didn’t hold back his admiration for the offensive set-up charaded by Ben Johnson.
This offense reminds me of what great offense should be in the NFL. I’d love to be the quarterback in this offense. It’s so much fun.
Tom Brady said on air
Netflix then played the clip of Brady’s praise for Goff during the filming of Quarterback. The cheeky personality of Goff couldn’t let that go so easily, though. He replied in a classy way, jabbing at Brady while also praising the Lions’ coaching room.
Yeah. Too bad, Tom. You’re retired. It is fun to play quarterback on our offense, and I’m given a lot of ownership and control, and given the keys to a lot of what we do. I appreciate Tom saying that, but Tom, you stay in the booth. You can keep calling games, and it’s been fun.
Jared Goff grinned
Jared Goff’s response to Tom Brady wanting to be the QB of the #Lions offense:
“Yeah too bad Tom, you’re retired”

All eyes on Jared Goff as he enters a pivotal year
The Detroit Lions in the upcoming season will be significantly different from the high-scoring offense that everyone enjoyed over the past two years. The Lions have lost both their offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and their defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn to the Chicago Bears in the last offseason.
This alone means that it is finally the litmus year for Jared Goff in the Blue and Whites. He has the services of Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jahmyr Gibbs, both of whom have proven their worth in an offensive unit. Gibbs and St. Brown were selected for the Pro Bowl in the past two and three seasons, respectively. Gibbs also co-led the league in most rushing touchdowns last season.
Without the support, Goff would need to take up the charge. After all, he has personal milestones to chase as well. In 134 games, Goff has recorded 222 passing touchdowns, making him the 39th on the list of most passing TDs by a quarterback. He is preceded by Ryan Fitzpatrick in the 38th place, with just one touchdown more than Goff.
He could also break Steve Young’s 232 mark in the upcoming season. Furthermore, he can break into the top 30 if he continues to keep track with his average touchdowns in a single season.
