Celtics Star Sends Clear Message on Retirement Decision

The Boston Celtics have gotten very impressive production from Al Horford at 38 years old. While he is not the same player who made five All-Star teams in his first 11 seasons, the 6-foot-9 center can still play high-level rotation minutes on a contender like Boston.

Horford is in the final season of his two-year, $19 million contract and will be an unrestricted free agent this summer. At 38 years old, Horford could decide to retire from the NBA instead of returning for a 19th season. While talking with Heavy's Steve Bulpett, the 2024 NBA champion sent a clear message on his looming decision.Boston Celtics center Al Horford (42)

“I’m still very hungry, very driven, so I want to continue to play,” Horford told Bulpett. “I mean, I feel good... It’s obviously a lot of work for me to maintain and be out here to perform, but… I love it. I mean, I love it. So, yeah, I want to keep playing. This is good.”

While he made it clear he is not planning to retire, Horford admitted his next contract with the Celtics hasn't been discussed yet.

“Not really," he said. "My whole thing was I don’t want this to be even a topic. You know, we’re locked in on what we’re supposed to do now, and that’s kind of that."
