Celtics Projected to Draft 6-Foot-10, 255-Pound Defensive Anchor

The Boston Celtics are entering the offseason with major frontcourt questions. Al Horford and Luke Kornet are free agents. Kristaps Porzingis has already been traded to the Atlanta Hawks. That leaves the team in need of a new big—and the 2025 NBA Draft might be their best chance to find one. One name gaining traction? Georgetown’s Thomas Sorber, who could be available when the Celtics pick at No. 28.

Celtics Projected to Draft 6-Foot-10, 255-Pound Defensive Anchor

Sorber’s Strengths Jump Off the Tape

At 6-foot-10 and 255 pounds, Sorber already has the body of an NBA big. But it’s his blend of physicality and skill that makes him one of the most intriguing late-first-round prospects. As a freshman at Georgetown, Sorber averaged 14.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 2.0 blocks per game on 53.2% shooting—earning Third Team All-Big East honors in the process.

He’s not just a bruiser. Sorber has soft hands, good touch around the rim, and surprising footwork when attacking off the bounce. He thrives in pick-and-roll action, finishing through contact and making himself a consistent lob threat.

A Seamless Fit in the Celtics’ System

The Celtics love bigs who play physically, set hard screens, and protect the paint. Sorber checks every box. He rebounds on both ends, contests shots without fouling, and doesn’t need the ball to make an impact. With Horford’s minutes in flux and Porzingis already gone, Boston could use a big who brings energy, physicality, and defensive pride.

His low-post game also adds a new wrinkle to Boston’s offense. While the Celtics have leaned into floor-spacing, Sorber gives them a more traditional look—one that could thrive when Jaylen Brown sits or when the team needs a spark in the paint.

Georgetown’s Thomas Sorber’s official measurements from the NBA Draft Combine:

6’9 ¼ barefoot, 262.8 lbs with a 7’6” wingspan and 9’1″standing reach

Impressive measurements for the freshman center with that crazy wingspan that will be one of the longest in the NBA.

Shooting Potential Still a Work in Progress

Sorber shot just 16.2% from three on limited attempts, so he’s not a floor-stretcher—yet. But according to NBC Sports Boston’s Chris Forsberg, his mechanics are clean enough to project future growth. If he adds a reliable jumper to his arsenal, he could go from rotational big to full-time starter.

He’s also been praised for his work ethic and competitiveness—two traits that tend to thrive in the Celtics’ system.

Celtics Shouldn’t Overlook the Opportunity

At pick No. 28, Boston likely won’t find a finished product—but they can find a long-term piece. Thomas Sorber isn’t just a high-floor player. He’s a prospect with room to grow and the skills to immediately contribute. His defensive instincts, toughness, and low-post polish make him an ideal heir to Horford—and the kind of player who could win over Celtics fans quickly.

For a team retooling its frontcourt on the fly, Sorber might be exactly what Boston needs.
