CeeDee Lamb and the Dallas Cowboys agreed to a restructured contract on Tuesday, and the star wide receiver later sent a clear message about why he was open to reworking his deal.
Lamb has signed a new contract with the Cowboys that will save the team $20M against the salary cap in 2025, according to a report from ESPN’s Todd Archer. The news surfaced on the same day that Dallas defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa signed a four-year, $80M extension.
Star players usually do not take a pay cut when agreeing to a restructured deal, and that is almost certainly the case with Lamb. The Cowboys likely moved some guaranteed money forward in order to free up cap space. Still, at least one fan questioned why the four-time Pro Bowl wideout would agree to a new deal.
Lamb had a good response.
The Cowboys have been negotiating a new contract with star pass-rusher Micah Parsons. Lamb and the team undoubtedly had Parsons in mind when the two sides reached an agreement that freed up cap space.
Dak Prescott will likely be the next star player to rework his deal with the Cowboys. The quarterback has a salary cap hit of nearly $90M in 2025. There have been estimates that Dallas could free up as much as $40M in cap space if it restructures Prescott’s contract.
The Cowboys are coming off a highly disappointing 7-10 season. Prescott missed much of the year with an injury, but he expects to be fully cleared for the start of 2025.
In addition to trying to re-sign Parsons, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones likely wants to set off some fireworks in free agency. Lamb has helped pave the way for the team to do just that.
