Canucks Officially Shopping Around Star Defenseman, Taking Fans by Surprise

Vancouver Canucks GM Patrik Allvin has officially placed Filip Hronek on the trade block, as they are looking to free up some cap space to make a huge splash.

The 2024-25 campaign definitely was one of disappointment for the Vancouver Canucks, who missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the fourth time in five years.

Roster changes came swiftly at the end of their season, most prominently on the back of the bench.

Rick Tocchet departed, and Adam Foote, who was an assistant coach for parts of the past three seasons, was brought in to fill his place.

Jim Rutherford and Patrik Allvin will be very active this offseason

Additional transactions are coming this off-season. Team president Jim Rutherford indicated he would get active retooling the roster in the hopes of making a significant trade to get the Canucks into the playoff mix for 2026.

The Canucks reportedly are shopping defenseman Filip Hronek prior to his straight-out no-movement clause kicks in on July 1, according to 'GOAT RADIO - Podcast'.

Hronek could be the franchise's key trade piece as the organization tries to shake up its core ahead of free agency, according to the podcast.

With Victor Mancini, who impressed since arriving in January and throughout Calder Cup Playoffs, and newly signed franchise top prospect Tom Willander, being brought in, Hronek being on the trade board isn't shocking.

But Hronek has been a blue-line workhorse and is still an elite top-four defender. His contract might not allow him to remain in Vancouver, though.

Hronek has agreed to earn $7.25 million annually through the 2031-32 season, and that might dissuade some teams.

But for teams with a lot of space against the cap, such as the Columbus Blue Jackets or Utah Mammoth, his ability and dependability might be too enticing to forego.
