Monday marked Day 4 of the IIHF World Championship, and all four Vancouver Canucks representatives were in action:
Filip Hronek and Team Czechia
Filip Hronek and the Czechs kicked off the day against Denmark.
It was a bit of a slow start with a scoreless tie after the opening frame. But the doors busted wide open in the second period, starting with a Martin Necas goal just over three minutes into the game, assisted by Hronek:
It won’t be shown in this clip, but Hronek earns the second assist after passing it to Ondrej Beranek, who throws it to the net front, and it deflects off Necas’s skate. The Czechs would add another tally under a minute later.
The Czechs weren’t done there, scoring two more goals, with Hronek finding his second assist of the game on the fourth goal:
Again, his assist won’t be seen on this play as Lukas Sedlak and David Pastrnak pass it back and forth, with Pastrnak taking the puck behind the net, finding Sedlak at the net front, who fires a backhand shot through Frederik Dochow.
The Czechs would head into the second intermission with a 4-1 lead, and add another two goals in the third period to solidify a 7-2 victory. Czechia now leads Group B, holding a 2-1-0-0 record, one point ahead of Switzerland.
Hronek finished the game with three shots on goal in 20:17 minutes of ice time.
Conor Garland, Drew O’Connor and Team USA
Conor Garland, Drew O’Connor and the Americans took on the Swiss.
The Swiss got off to a hot start with two first period goals from Damian Riat and New Jersey Devils defenceman Joonas Siegenthaler. Switzerland walked into the first intermission with a 2-0 lead, despite the Americans outshooting them 9-5.
The middle frame was more even, with the shots finishing 11-9 for the Swiss, as they entered the final frame with the same scoreline.
However, the Americans did not come out for the third period with any urgency as if they were trailing. They were outshot 11-5, and the Swiss officially put the game away with under 10 minutes to go, sealing the 3-0 win.
USA sits in fourth place in Group B, with a 2-0-0-1 record, tied with Germany, who have a game in hand.
Garland finished the game with four shots on goal in 15:42 minutes of ice time, while O’Connor had two shots on goal through 16:07 minutes.
Marcus Pettersson and Team Sweden
Pettersson and the Swedes battled against a heated rival, Team Finland.
The Swedes took control of this first period, outshooting the Finns 16-2 in the opening frame. One of those shots resulted in a goal off the stick of Anaheim Ducks centreman Leo Carlsson, assisted by a pair of Detroit Red Wings, defenceman Erik Gustafsson and winger Lucas Raymond.
Sweden would build on their lead after another dominant second period, outshooting Finland 17-7. Minnesota Wild defenceman Jonas Brodin gave the Swedes a two-goal lead, with Raymond getting his second assist of the game.
Finland finally figured out Jacob Markstrom in the third period, when Harri Pesonen gave his nation some life. However, it was not enough as Pettersson and Sweden closed out the game 2-1.
Sweden sits atop Group A with a 3-0-0-0 record, leading Canada by three points in one more game played.
The Canucks defenceman would not find the scoresheet, but played 16:29 minutes of ice time and registered two shots on goal.
None of the Canucks representatives are schedule to play on Tuesday, May 13. The Americans and Swedes will return to action on Wednesday, with Garland and O’Connor taking on Norway, while Pettersson will meet Latvia.
