Day three of the IIHF World Championship has come and gone, and three Vancouver Canucks players were in action.
Conor Garland and Drew O’Connor: USA 6, Hungary 0
Team USA picked Hungary apart for their second win of the tournament on Sunday morning. With the victory, USA remains tied at the top of Group B in wins with Germany, but the USA’s Goals for of 11 and Goals Against of zero has them holding the tiebreaker.
Garland’s goal came early in the third period, with the Americans already leading by four. Chicago’s Frank Nazar moved in off the rush and tried to find Shane Pinto at the net front that Pinto couldn’t quite bury. With the Hungarian netminder sprawled out, Pinto fed Garland doing what Canucks fans have seen him do so often — drive straight towards the net.
Garland also assisted on Frank Nazar’s opening goal 14 minutes into the first period.
The final shots on goal were 39:13 in favour of the USA.
Hronek’s Czechia edges out Norway
Later in the day, Filip Hronek’s Team Czechia narrowly beat Norway to pick up their first regulation win of the tournament. They now sit in third place (among eight teams) in Group B. While Hronek got on the scoresheet in Czechia’s first game of the tournament, he was held pointless in Sunday’s low-scoring affair. Jakub Flek and David Pastrnak were the two goalscorers for Czechia.
Czechia, USA, and Sweden (Marcus Pettersson), will all be in action on Monday.
