On Sunday, the Vancouver Canucks pulled the trigger on a trade that sent Arturs Silovs to the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for Chase Stillman and a 2027 fourth round pick.
It’s a trade we had a good feeling was coming, as both GM Patrik Allvin and president Jim Rutherford hinted at a possible trade involving the young goaltender recent weeks. We — along with regular readers of CanucksArmy — also weren’t exactly surprised by the return, as we tabbed Silovs’ value at a fourth round pick when we wrote about it yesterday.
Let’s see what Canucks fans are saying about this trade.

Hockey Fan in Mexico: I feel we sold high here. When you look at 2nd round picks for back up goalies an unproven asset at the NHL a prospect and a pick is fairly good value. Not having a Demko Silvos tandem this year is really on Silvos anyway. He was Given the opportunity at the start of last season to become the goaltender of the future and did not deliver.
JCanuck: That’s a decent return. I like Arty but he still has issues with tracking the puck in traffic. That will take time to sort out and Abby isn’t the place. Former 1st and a future isn’t bad.
Appleboy: We were told to expect a 4th or 5th. We got a 4th plus an AHL player. Why all the negativity? I am the type who takes his bottles to the recycling depot. Every $10 counts. Kudryavtsev was a 7th round pick.
alpacaduck: This did not need to happen and the Canucks put themselves in this position because they wanted to. They did not need to sign Demko above market rate after a down season. This was an extension, not a FA signng. They did not need to trade Silovs as cashing out on Demko (or Lankinen before July 1) would have been been closer to a value trade. Now they’re spending more money than almost anyone for goaltending. And sheep will downvote me in one breath and then wonder why they don’t have money to sign a 2C in the next. Hilarious.
Hockey Bunker: So Silovs traded for a fourth rounder and Stillman thrown in to fill as spot on Abby when one of the Abby Canucks graduates to the big club this fall. The alternative was lose Silovs on waivers. So something has the potential to be better than nothing…..and cannot be worth less than nothing. When the team re-signed Demko the choices came down to just two…..trade Silovs or lose him on waivers…..the team decided his future is elsewhere. The die is cast….Demko needs a healthy season.
Agent86Fan: Arty will get a chance to play in Pittsburgh, and with their team going into a rebuild, a scrambling, less structured team might be just what brings out the best in him.
kanucked: We love our goalie prospects. Many of us were upset by the Lack trade for a 3rd round pick (Brisebois). Some were upset about Schneider for a top 10 pick (Horvat). I wasn’t expecting much of a return Silovs and I think they did fine in a market where goalies don’t have much trade value. I know Stillman is a project, but it seems to me that the return was comparable to the Lack trade.
Northcoast: Silovs has more potential than lankinen, and when Demko gets injured again this year they are going to wish they had a competent back up for lankinen. This management proves once again how clueless they are. Allvin has also proved once again that he cant make a deal with anyone besides Pittsburgh lol. But rest easy Canucks fans, Chase Stillman had one goal in 19 AHL games last year and has had less points each year since joining the AHL 3 years ago as a first round pick. A fringe 4th liner who can barely hack it in a lower league, Just the type of player Allvin likes.
Maniago: It seems based on the few comments that fans are fairly upset about this but I’m not sure at all what kind of long term upside he had with the Canucks. At the NHL level he could run hot but seemed unable to read screened shots. He was virtually unplayable early last season: almost a guaranteed loss. He could be fantastic when he ran hot but I for one don’t see where he would fit moving forward as he could also run cold. Too often. The Canucks did him a solid. Good on them.
