The American Hockey League announced today that Abbotsford Canucks forward Aatu Räty has been selected as the Howies Hockey Tape/AHL Player of the Week.
The recognition comes as no surprise as Räty enjoyed an offensive explosion last week, tallying an impressive nine points (two goals, seven assists) in four contests. He played a pivotal role in the Canucks’ undefeated six-game homestand.
Räty’s week began with a bang on Tuesday night. He notched a goal and three assists, matching a career-high with four points, in a 6-3 victory over the Ontario Reign. He continued his playmaking dominance in Wednesday’s rematch, dishing out three more assists in a 5-2 Abbotsford win.
While he was held off the scoresheet in Saturday’s 3-2 nail-biter against the San Jose Barracuda, he bounced back with a goal and an assist in Sunday’s thrilling 5-4 victory, a win that cemented the Canucks’ franchise record for consecutive home victories.
Thanks to this outburst, the 22-year-old native of Oulu, Finland, has now accumulated seven goals and 13 assists for 20 points in 21 games to share second place among all Abbotsford skaters. He’s now back on track to eclipse his 52-point career high set last year’s season, firing at a 54-point pace.
He’s also showcased his skills at the NHL level, contributing two goals and two assists in 20 games with Vancouver. In addition to his offensive numbers, he has been a steady presence in the face-off circle and has won around 55% of his total draws.
Räty’s success is a testament to his dedication and development within the Canucks organization. Since arriving in North America near the end of the 2021-22 season, he has steadily improved his game, becoming a key contributor at both the AHL and NHL levels. In 147 career AHL games with Abbotsford and Bridgeport, he has registered 34 goals and 65 assists for 99 points.
The Canucks now embark on a three-game road trip, beginning in Tucson, where they will face the Roadrunners on Friday, January 24th (6:00 pm PT).
