If Justin Fields ever wanted a fair chance to prove he is worthy of being a starter in the NFL, he's got in with the New York Jets.
Already with a clean runway this offseason after the franchise announced him as the starter before an OTA practice had taken place, it is all on Fields' shoulders in 2025 to prove he can be "the" guy for Aaron Glenn.
Some are skeptical, and rightly so, given that Fields has yet to consistently demonstrate that he is starting-caliber in his career.
For former New York Jet Leger Douzable, he wonders if Fields is the answer to the franchise's quarterback problems.
“Has Justin Fields solved the quarterback issue for the New York Jets?” Douzable said. “Going back to 2020, six different starting quarterbacks for the New York Jets, six different players have started at the most pivotal position in the NFL. Justin Fields has a real opportunity to submit himself as a franchise guy for the New York Jets.
“Have they solved their quarterback woes? Six different starting quarterbacks, you can’t have that and have sustained success.”
Fields showed consistency with the Pittsburgh Steelers last season, posting a 4-2 record. However, Mike Tomlin wanted more out of the offense, which averaged roughly 20 points per game.
Will that suffice with the Jets? Not likely, but with Garrett Wilson, Breece Hall, Josh Reynolds, Allen Lazard, and a solid offensive line, Justin does have something to work with, and let's not forget, Tanner Engstrand will want to bring some Detroit Lion football to the Big Apple, meaning running the football.
So Fields might not have to shoulder the load as he's done at his previous stops, but the biggest thing we'll be watching won't be his running ability, we know that already, but when it is his time to throw, can he do it to a consistently high level?
We're about to find out.
