It was mission accomplished for the No. 2 seed Boston Celtics on Sunday after they secured a 103-86 victory in Game 1 of their first-round series against the No. 7 Orlando Magic in the NBA playoffs.
There was a moment in the victory, however, that scared Celtics fans after Jayson Tatum was forced to exit the game due to a wrist injury. The six-time All-Star was able to return after being checked by the medical team on the bench, but there's no denying that the capacity crowd inside TD Garden had to hold their collective breath after seeing Tatum go down.
Tatum landed awkwardly after Magic veteran Kentavious Caldwell-Pope tried to block the Celtics star's dunk attempt. The referees reviewed the incident and decided to hit Caldwell-Pope with a Flagrant 1 for what they deemed as an excessively physical play.
Tatum was on the floor for a considerable period after the foul and was slow to get up. He stayed on the bench instead of heading to the locker room, and the medical staff was able to clear him to return to action.
A fan video of the incident is currently making its rounds on social media. A camera was able to catch the home fans' immediate reaction to Tatum's injury scare.
After seeing their superstar get up, Celtics fans showered Tatum with MVP chants as he slowly walked toward the bench.
It wasn't exactly an MVP performance from Tatum in this one, though. He finished with 17 points on 8-of-22 shooting, to go along with 14 rebounds, four assists, a steal, a block and zero turnovers in 40 minutes of play.
It doesn't seem like he suffered a significant injury here, but the Celtics should provide an official update on the 27-year-old after the game. Given that this is the NBA Playoffs, however, you can be sure that Tatum will do everything in his power to be ready for Game 2 on Wednesday.
