Cam Ward speaks out on the top five NFL quarterbacks, includes Commanders’ Jayden Daniels

Hurricanes QB Cam Ward hopes to climb the rankings himself but for now, he has revealed who made the cut into his top five.

Cam Ward has already had a fuller year than usual. Between wrapping up his final season, fielding a transition away from college, and the NFL Combine, he’s been quite busy.

However, his spring is far from over. The 2025 NFL Draft looms and with it, his fate. At this point, it seems certain that he will join the New York Giants or the Tennessee Titans. However, the Cleveland Browns also sit in the second spot as a possibility.

While still busier than usual, Ward still had more time on his hands than most prospects at the 2025 NFL Combine, choosing to skip the throwing drills. Ward has instead chosen to refer scouts to his college stats.

The choice not to throw and Ward’s threat to teams who don’t draft him have put the league on notice. However, while it is clear that he is confident about himself, who does he believe will be the best quarterbacks he’ll face?

Cam Ward gives his top five list

Speaking at the 2025 NFL Combine, Cam Ward was asked to give his choice for the top five quarterbacks in the NFL. He chose not to recuse himself in any of the rankings but gave his choice of the top five in no particular order.

He said: “I’m not going to include myself. I’m not in the league yet. I would say Jayden Daniels, Pat [Mahomes], Lamar [Jackson], I would say Josh Allen’s up there, and Jalen Hurts.”

It wasn’t the most unique list ever, but inserting Jayden Daniels into his top five active quarterbacks is the hottest take. As barely more than a rookie, the Commanders quarterback lacks a significant enough sample size compared to the others.

While getting into the NFC Championship was impressive, calling him one of the top five out of 32 quarterbacks after one season with no prove-it year is certainly a ringing endorsement. Daniels’ 25 touchdown passes also ranked tenth in the NFL in 2024.

Cam Ward made three significant omissions

While each of Cam Ward’s top five quarterback choices has a strong case to be made, there were three other names that Ward omitted that might surprise some. Justin Herbert, who has put up numbers with ease and who threw for just three interceptions in 2024, was left out.

Joe Burrow, who led the league in touchdown passes, was left out. Baker Mayfield, who threw for 41 touchdown passes in 2024, was also left out. Both quarterbacks carried struggling defenses and ultimately saw their seasons end within a week of each other.

It seems that Ward’s criteria requires a deep playoff run as all five quarterbacks had a playoff run to at least within a game of the Super Bowl.
