Thursday Night Football between the Chicago Bears hosting the Seattle Seahawks was a big switch from the two blowout games on Christmas Day.
The Bears and the Seahawks came down to the wire but with limited scoring.
The Seattle Seahawks kept their NFC West Divisional title hopes alive as they would handed the Chicago Bears their 10th consecutive loss of the season. It was a game that featured some good moments from Bears rookie quarterback Caleb Williams despite the offensive line and the coaching having their own terrible moments.
The game is just a summary of the Bears’ season; right at the finish line, but unable to execute a win.
Caleb Williams shines in Bears’ dull moment
Williams didn’t have a dominant performance on Thursday Night Football. On the statsheet, he completed 16-of-28 of his passes for 122 yards, one interception (his first in several weeks) and a QBR of 24.4.
On the field, Williams was giving the Bears solid opportunities to drive the ball down the field by escaping constant pressure from the Seahawks’ defense. He delivered incredible second-chance plays to Rome Odunze, D’Andre Swift and D.J. Moore.
Among the biggest problems for the Bears was the horrible play from the offensive line. Williams was sacked seven times and was hit 10 other times. The Seahawks also accounted for 10 tackles for loss in the backfield. It wasn’t just the sacks allowed and poor blocking, but it was the poor play overall.
The biggest play of the game was when Williams rolled out to his left and delivered a beautiful pass to Odzune for a 17-yard touchdown late in the second quarter. That touchdown pass was negated because of a holding call from left guard Jake Curhan. The Bears would ultimately have to settle for a field goal, their only score of the game.
Bears told Williams is delivering
Chicago entered the season with serious hope for a NFC Playoff appearance. The roster was strong, the defense looked elite and the Bears had weapons for a growing rookie quarterback.
As the Bears have shown before, nothing brings down a team like bad coaching and bad front office moves. This season’s downturn can be blamed on the poor decisions made by ownership, general manager Ryan Poles and former head coach Matt Eberflus.
This team’s potential has been held back due to the hesitant or thoughtless decision-making to improve the team.
Ownership appears to not take the team seriously on the field. Poles has been too open to Eberflus getting a third NFL chance instead of going for interested coaches like Jim Harbaugh. Finally, poor coaching from Eberflus and offensive coordinator Shane Waldron has limited the offense’s potential.
There was a lot to talk about from this game. Among the people who spoke about the disappointing result from the Bears is Fox Sports host Colin Cowherd in a reaction YouTube video.
He blasted: “Caleb Williams has thrown for 300 yards four times this season, that’s more than Patrick Mahomes. That’s remarkable.
“Tonight, he had an interception for the first time in forever. Nobody could have succeeded with this team and this season. Basically, they’re using their third different person is sorta assembling the game plan this year.
“It is just a circus. It’s an absolute circus. He’s still the youngest quarterback in the NFC; he’s got boundless talent.
“He made a couple of really nice throws tonight….Caleb’s got all sorts of talent, but there’s nothing you can do with this franchise. There’s nothing I like about it.”
