Jaylon Johnson and the Bears defense have pushed the rookie QB, but he’s bounced back early in his first NFL offseason
In a March interview on Kay Adams’ Up & Adams Show, Chicago Bears CB Jaylon Johnson was asked about the then, presumed number one overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, Caleb Williams, and how he might be received by veterans in the Bears locker room. Johnson gave a response that was later clipped and shared without the full context, understandably creating waves around the country. Here it is, in case you missed it:
While the “Hollywood” line made for a sensational headline built on the idea of potential turmoil, Jaylon was quick to clarify that in the full context of the interview his point was that Caleb, like any highly touted rookie, would be alright coming into the league as long as they put all their past accolades, accomplishments, and ego aside and stayed humble.
Months later, Caleb Williams is officially slated to be the starting quarterback of the Chicago Bears in 2024, and Johnson has had actual experience sharing a locker room with him. So, after all of the fuss made in the Spring, is anybody wondering what Jaylon Johnson has actually thought about that experience? Well, Jim Rome was at least:
The rookie QB “fits in perfectly” with the “hard-nosed” team and city. Expectations are high for Williams, but Johnson’s words certainly give another reason for optimism. Williams and fellow first-round draft pick, Rome Odunze, have yet to sign their rookie contracts, but with training camp right around the corner, we should expect both names in ink sooner rather than later.
