The Cleveland Browns already have a crowded quarterback room, with two NFL veterans and a pair of rookies including former Colorado star Shedeur Sanders, but one analyst believes there is room for another $180 million signal-caller.
The Browns will head into training camp with a competition between veterans Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett along with Sanders and fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel. Though Sanders was once projected as a Top 5 NFL draft pick, he tumbled to the fifth round and has been stuck at fourth in the depth chart through the team's early practices.
With no clear frontrunner -- and Sanders looking sharp but not close to challenging for the starting job -- Bleacher Report's Paul Kasabian suggests the Browns could take aim at veteran Kirk Cousins.
Despite signing a $180 million contract with the Atlanta Falcons, Cousins' future has been uncertain ever since he was benched for rookie Michael Penix Jr. last season. Cousins made it clear to Falcons team owner Arthur Blank that he wants to be traded, Kasabian wrote, and the Browns could be the top fit.
Kasabian wrote that despite four quarterbacks competing for the starting job in Cleveland, Cousins would be the immediate frontrunner if he joined the team.
"Cousins is arguably the best quarterback of the bunch, as his resume proves," Kasabian wrote. "In theory, if the Browns aren't comfortable with naming anyone from that quarter QB1, then a trade could potentially transpire. Plus, the connection with Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski, who was Cousins' quarterbacks coach with the Vikings in 2018 and offensive coordinator in 2018 and 2019, is certainly notable here as well."
