Broncos Receive Concerning Update on 3,500-Yard Star Running Back

With Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty viewed as a consensus Top 12 draft pick, North Carolina's Omarion Hampton has become the popular First Round selection for the Denver Broncos in NFL mock drafts.

However, the Broncos might not get the opportunity to draft him. Assuming Jeanty is selected in the top ten, Hampton has been projected as high as No. 12 overall to the Dallas Cowboys. The latest report from one NFL insider casts further doubt on Hampton's likelihood of falling to the Broncos at No. 20 overall.

According to Jordan Schultz of Fox Sports, "North Carolina RB Omarion Hampton continues to skyrocket up draft boards. One executive I spoke with compared him and Ashton Jeanty to the Bijan Robinson-Jahmyr Gibbs class, saying both will go "very early."

Schultz added, "Hampton - who's being lauded for his combination of vision, balance and toughness - visited the Cowboys on Friday. He also has several other visits lined up, following a series of private workouts already completed."

The Broncos have a significant need at running back, and Hampton offers the three-down versatility that general manager George Paton discussed earlier this week.

During a sit-down interview with 9NEWS, Paton said:

I think everyone is searching for that three-down back that doesn't come off the field. A real good runner, a really talented runner, yet on third down he can create mismatches and he can pass protect.

Given the uncertainty of Hampton falling to No. 20 overall, the Broncos may need to trade up for one of the top two running backs in this year's draft class.

If that option doesn't work out, the Broncos can pivot to Day Two running back prospects like TreVeyon Henderson, Quinshon Judkins, and Kaleb Johnson.
