Broncos change up Courtland Sutton’s contract to create cap space

In the wake of the massive contract extension for Patrick Surtain II, the Denver Broncos and Courtland Sutton came to an agreement on a revised contract.

According to Broncos insider Mike Klis, the Broncos converted $11.875 million dollars of Sutton’s base salary of $13 million for the 2024 season into an upfront bonus. In total, the team will save $9.5 million in cap space and be compliant in that regard for the ‘24 campaign. With this move, the Broncos have roughly $7.5 million in cap space per Spotrac which is significantly more prior to both deals being done.

Denver Broncos free up cap space by reworking Courtland Sutton's contract - Mile High Report

This will allow the team some flexibility to make some moves during the season if the need arises. If they play well, I wouldn’t be surprised to see them be buyers at the trade deadline to add another talented player if they are in the postseason chase. If they don’t, they will simply roll that over into next season.

Of further note, Surtain’s deal also lowered his cap hit for the 2025 which increases Denver’s salary cap space to $54 million. That’s one of the highest amounts in the National Football League. The team has only 37 players under contract for ‘25, but a full rookie draft class and handful of UDFAs will help round out the roster.

With that amount of cap space and an ownership group who hasn’t been shy about spending big, I’d expect the franchise to make several bold additions in free agency next offseason to build around quarterback Bo Nix. Yesterday’s developments, as well as Quinn Meinerz’ extension a while back, the Broncos clearly have identified their long-term building blocks on the team.

After eight years of struggles, it finally appears the Broncos are on the verge of building something special. Now let’s go out and root for them hard to defeat the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday!
