Brian Windhorst Reveals His Expectations For Celtics’ Title Defense

During the 2023-24 NBA regular season, there was no team in the league better than the star-studded Boston Celtics, with Jayson Tatum and company firing on all cylinders on their way to a league-best 64 wins, clinching the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference with ease.

That dominance carried over to the 2024 NBA Playoffs, as no team in the East gave Boston much trouble once it got going in the postseason, and it was clear the Celtics were the best all-around team in the league.

Ultimately, the Celtics got to the 2024 NBA Finals relatively unscathed and faced the tough challenge of getting the best of the upstart Dallas Mavericks, who defied the odds throughout the playoffs in the Western Conference, with superstars Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic playing at a high level.

Although some believed that Boston would struggle against Dallas because it wasn’t tested in the playoffs leading up to the Finals, the Celtics continued to dominate, crushing the Mavericks in five games to win the franchise’s 18th title, which is an NBA record, breaking the tie with the arch-rival Los Angeles Lakers.

With the Celtics as dominant as they were during the 2023-24 season, there’s been talk of a new dynasty brewing in Boston, with some already picking the franchise to win back-to-back titles.

ESPN insider Brian Windhorst said he believes the Celtics will put up a good fight in their attempt to repeat, but it will be a tougher challenge than last year.

“I expect the Celtics to give a great title defense, but it’s not going to be the same once you’ve won the championship,” Windhorst said, via NBA on ESPN.

The Celtics will head into the 2024-25 NBA season with a target on their back because every team in the Eastern Conference has been making moves to compete with the defending champions.

The New York Knicks and Philadelphia 76ers made big acquisitions this offseason to improve their chances of knocking off Boston, making the conference even more interesting to watch.
