The Washington Commanders' backfield has been an area of strength throughout the season. It's the primary focal point for offensive improvements overall and has given rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels a solid support system to take the league by storm in Year 1 of his professional career.
When the running game isn't effective, the Commanders struggle to find their rhythm. Concerns were raised further in Week 12 against the Dallas Cowboys, with Brian Robinson Jr. and Austin Ekeler both suffering issues that put their respective statuses this weekend versus the Tennessee Titans in severe doubt.
Ekeler sustained a violent and scary hit on a kick return late in the game and is currently going through the NFL's concussion protocol. Robinson suffered an ankle sprain on Washington's first offensive drive. The former third-round selection came back into the game, but he couldn't manage anything more than five carries before being taken out of the firing line entirely.
The Commanders worked out a couple of running backs and signed Chris Rodriguez Jr. back to the squad this week. This was a contingency plan if nothing else, but Robinson seemed confident he could get involved if everything went according to plan at practice.
Brian Robinson Jr. remains confident in his Commanders' participation vs. the Titans
After being listed as a limited participant on Wednesday, the Alabama product offered a bullish outlook regarding his potential participation in Week 13. There's a long way to go, but Robinson is fiercely determined to help his teammates in a must-win contest.
"It was a surprising day, actually. I was actually able to go out, put strength on it, and move around. I felt pretty good for what I was doing today. I’m just looking forward to making some great progress this week, which I expect to do. If all goes well, yes, I will play Sunday. I am glad I was able to go out there today and move around and see where I was at. I think I’m in a great spot."
- Brian Robinson Jr.
The Commanders will take every precaution with Robinson. It's a process before confidence can increase. However, they have their upcoming Week 14 bye to get the backfield threat some prolonged rest before Washington's final four regular-season engagements.
Even if Robinson gets the green light, he's not going to be at 100 percent. The Titans have a stingy run defense giving up just 106.7 yards per game on the ground. Jeffery Simmons is one of the league's most formidable defensive linemen. Washington cannot afford to fall into the trap is being pass-heavy in the face of a pretty good unit overall.
Expect to see a lot of Jeremy McNichols and Rodriguez regardless of whether Robinson suits up or not. The Commanders will pick their spots with their best backfield weapon. They'll also see how he responds to physical contact in a competitive setting before adjusting accordingly.
Robinson will stake his case for involvement. But looking at how kicker Austin Seibert performed after rushing back against the Cowboys, head coach Dan Quinn and his staff would be wise to take the decision out of his hands if need be.
The Commanders are a better team when Robinson is on the field. Hopefully, he'll be able to fight through the pain and make a lasting contribution.
