Every single year, the Green Bay Packers and other NFL teams make shocking decisions when it comes to the 53-man roster. Fans react to those decisions when the time comes and it may not be any different this season. For the past 19 years, there has been one undrafted free agent who has made the Green Bay Packers roster.
They are looking to make it 20 years in a row with that feat. Training camp always has a bunch of surprises. There is a clearer picture of what to expect during training camp with OTAs and mandatory mini-camp in the rearview mirror.
There is also a question as to how many players the Green Bay Packers will keep at each position. There could be some surprises to the roster this season.
The Green Bay Packers May Only Keep Five Wide Receivers On the Roster And Decide To Cut Malik Heath Before the Start of the 2024 Season
It is not a secret that Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs, Dontayvion Wicks, Jayden Reed, and Bo Melton will make the 53-man roster. Melton has become a lock at the wide receiver position after he performed extremely well during OTAs and mandatory minicamps.
According to Freddie Boston of lombardiavenue.com, he thinks that those will be the only wide receivers who make the 53-man roster this season. Boston believes that Malik Heath could very well not make the 53-man roster after he made it a season ago as an undrafted free agent from Ole Miss.
Boston said:
“Training camp hasn’t even started yet, but the top five at wide receiver are likely set. The top four are roster locks, and Bo Melton is on track to make the 53. Samori Toure, Malik Heath, and Grant DuBose are all competing for a roster spot. If one of them steps up at training camp, the Packers may need to make room for a sixth receiver.”
The odds are that the Green Bay Packers should go with six wide receivers instead of five. That is what they did a season ago. Malik Heath is going to have to earn his way again to the roster like he did a season ago. One of the reasons why Heath might not make is because Boston also thinks that the Green Bay Packers will keep four tight ends on the roster.
Boston has Luke Musgrave, Tucker Kraft, Ben Sims, and Tyler Davis making the roster at the tight end position. It is rare for teams to keep four tight ends on an NFL roster. Malik Heath would be a better option to keep on the roster than Tyler Davis.
