BREAKING: Packers Trade Proposal Swaps Young WR, Draft Pick for Seahawks Edge

Boye Mafe is currently in the final year of his rookie contract with the Seattle Seahawks.

Without a fifth-year option available (that’s a benefit only granted to first-round picks), the upcoming season will be a huge one for the fourth-year pass rusher. The Seahawks must decide whether to extend him, use the franchise tag after the season or risk losing him in free agency after 2025.

Maybe the Seahawks would be better served getting something for him via trade instead?

Alex Ballentine of Bleacher Report named Mafe one of Seattle’s top trade assets, and the Green Bay Packers would be a good fit if Seattle were willing to part ways with him.

Rashan Gary remains Green Bay’s top pass rusher, coming off a Pro Bowl season in which he recorded 7.5 sacks. With him, there’s Lukas Van Ness and Kingsley Enagbare, neither of whom have created much of a stir. Trading for a player with Mafe’s potential would give the Packers a young edge to pair with Gary.

Packers Trade Proposal Swaps Romeo Doubs & 3rd-Rounder for Boye Mafe

GettyThe Green Bay Packers should try to trade for pass rusher Boye Mafe.

With trade rumors already surrounding Green Bay’s young group of wide receivers after the Matthew Golden selection, we think giving the Seahawks a promising wideout coupled with another high draft pick might sway them.

Here’s the trade proposal we put together:

  • Green Bay Packers receive: edge rusher Boye Mafe
  • Seattle Seahawks receive: WR Romeo Doubs, 2026 second-round pick

A second-round pick is good compensation for an ascending pass rusher who has yet to make a Pro Bowl.

Mafe’s ascent in the NFL has been both steady and impressive since the Seahawks drafted him 40th overall in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft out of Minnesota. As a rookie, he played in all 17 games and showed flashes of his potential, recording 41 tackles and 3.0 sacks despite making only three starts.

He has only gotten better from there.

A Look at Mafe’s 3 Seasons With the Seahawks

In 2023, Mafe had a breakout season. He started 16 games and led the team with 9.0 sacks, becoming the first player in franchise history to record a sack in seven consecutive games. He finished with 52 total tackles (nine for loss), a forced fumble, two fumble recoveries, 16 QB hits and six passes defensed.

By 2024, Mafe was no longer a developmental project—he was a fully formed threat on the edge. He tallied 40 total tackles (eight for loss), three pass breakups and 12 QB hits in 15 games (11 starts).

Despite a minor knee issue early in the season, Mafe remained one of the most reliable defenders on the roster. Through three seasons, the 26-year-old has amassed 18.0 sacks and 32 QB hits, and appears to be on the verge of a lucrative second contract. If he continues on this trajectory, he could soon be mentioned among the NFC’s premier edge rushers—and serve as a long-term anchor for whichever team locks him up.

Should Seattle’s season start to go south — and with new quarterback Sam Darnold at the helm, that’s a definite possibility — Mafe could be a trade chip if the team decides to start shedding assets.

Regardless, he’s a player Packers GM Brian Gutekunst should have his eye on, as a trade for Mafe could really elevate Green Bay’s defense.
