Many Green Bay Packers fans will find their team’s 27-2 loss to the Denver Broncos a frustrating watch. While it’s true that the reserves played most of the game, it’s still worrying that the backups weren’t able to step up against a Broncos team in the midst of a rebuild back to relevance.

While numerous talking points highlight the team’s second and third-string players, the final score magnified Sean Clifford’s performance as a deputy to Jordan Love. The 149th pick of the 2023 Draft isn’t expected to lead Green Bay to the Super Bowl, fans were curious to see how the 26-year-old would perform in his first start for the organization.

Some may feel disappointed that their backup QB didn’t meet the expected standards. However, the man is aware that his showing was unacceptable if he will keep his spot in the Packers roster in the long run.

Clifford was quite somber during his post-game interview, and it’s clear with every word he said that he feels accountable for the team’s terrible scoreline.

“We have a lot to work on, that’s for sure,” Clifford said. “Definitely humbled today. Did not make plays when they were there, just a lot of missed opportunities today. Just got to be better.”

One reporter said that Clifford—who finished the game with six completions for 43 yards and one pick—doesn’t have to blame himself fully for the loss as they were facing the full brunt of the Broncos defense for much of his time on the field.

However, the man himself refused to take the excuse and focused on what he could have done to put the Green Bay Packers in a better situation:

“That doesn’t matter to me. The fact of the matter to me is that we’re playing the Broncos. We need to be able to move the ball down the field. Ultimately, that falls on me and I take full responsibility.”

Clifford didn’t have plenty of opportunities to play during his rookie campaign. He only played in two games last season, making three attempts for a total of -3 yards. The small sample size doesn’t give Packers fans a clear picture of what he can offer, but they’ll be hopeful that he’ll step up to the plate when the games begin to matter.
