In doing so, he earned himself a head-coaching interview with the New York Jets before they decided to hire former Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn.
Jeff Hafley is the Reason Why the Packers’ Defense is Top-Tier
On defense, the Packers ended up sending edge-rusher Rashan Gary and star safety Xavier McKinney to the Pro Bowl, while rookie linebacker Edgerrin Cooper and rookie safety Evan Williams had their fair share of great moments.
In terms of where they ranked among all 32 teams, the Packers finished sixth in total defense, seventh in rush defense, sixth in scoring defense, tied for sixth in sacks, and fourth in takeaways.
While the players are the ones who go out there to make the plays each game, it all starts with the defensive coordinator.
That defensive coordinator happened to be Jeff Hafley, and he put his players in great positions as a first-year defensive coordinator at the NFL level.
That is why Hafley earned an interview this offseason.
The Packers Need to Win with Jeff Hafley
Hafley’s interview with the Jets means that his days in Green Bay could be numbered, especially if the Packers continue to win at a high level.
Remember, after the Packers finished atop the NFL in scoring offense in 2020, offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett was later named the head coach of the Denver Broncos.
This is not the first time that head coach Matt LaFleur has been at risk of losing a top assistant.
But Hafley’s ability to coach and to lead, as an assistant, is why Green Bay has its best chance to win a Super Bowl in recent memory.
With the elite talent that is on offense, which is fairly routine in Green Bay, this franchise now has the right defense in place to help bring the title back home.
However, if this team fails to bring a Super Bowl back in the coming years, it could risk losing Hafley, who could be on the lists of a number of teams looking to find their next head coach.
