Will he stay, or will he go? The Jaire Alexander uncertainty has created more fan fatigue than Aaron Rodgers leaving the Pittsburgh Steelers in a darkness retreat, but we may soon get an answer to this unwanted offseason drama.
The Green Bay Packers have sent out mixed messages when publicly discussing Alexander's future, which frustratingly complements the ever-changing reports from insiders.
Not defensive passing game coordinator Derrick Ansley. He made his stance clear by revealing that he has daily contact with the Packers' All-Pro cornerback.
"Every day. I contact him every morning. I send him a positive quote," said Ansley.
That's notable, as it's not just Ansley reaching out. Alexander has remained a great teammate to the new players on the roster, including first-round pick Matthew Golden.
In an interview with FanSided's Candace Pedraza earlier this month, Golden revealed that Alexander was among the first Packers to reach out to him.
Packers' daily contact with Jaire Alexander provides hope that he could return after all
Earlier in the offseason, it sounded laughable to suggest Alexander could stay. All reports indicated the Packers were ready to move on, even if they had to release the All-Pro.
Then things changed.
The Packers brought in free-agent Nate Hobbs, but having lost three cornerbacks, the former Raider can't replace Alexander on his own. Green Bay ignored opportunities to add cornerback help early in the draft, again raising questions about how the secondary would look sans Alexander.
Several recent rumors indicate the two sides could agree to a revised contract that would keep Alexander in Green Bay. It helps the Packers lower the salary cap risk while potentially offering incentives to make it worthwhile for Jaire.
His future remains a question mark with OTAs fast approaching, but it feels more positive than at any other point this offseason. The cryptic messages from the team may continue, but not from Ansley.
His insight tells us how he feels about Alexander, and it sounds like the Packers may agree.
